30 April-23 May. Each year an independent jury at the World Press Photo Foundation in Amsterdam selects images for this prestigious recognition of international photojournalism.

This year's 41 award-winning photographers come from 17 different countries: Australia, Bangladesh, Belgium, China, Denmark, Eritrea, Francia, Germany, Iran, Ireland, Italy, Polond, Russia, Sweden, Turkey, the UK and the US.

The 2014 winner is Mads Nissen whose intimate image of gay couple Jon and Alex was taken in St Petersburg, Russia, where life is becoming increasingly difficult for the LGBT community.
